HELLO, WIGWAM has been awarded a First Place Gold Medal by the Military Writers Society of America.
He is a most unlikely hero. Albert Costas is the youngest and lowest ranking soldier in the Vietnam War. He runs errands and does other menial tasks for the headquarters staff in Saigon. The transition to the real world—coming of age—is difficult for any young man, but for Albert it is the unreal world of Army life in a combat zone. The Saigon command is directed to provide an escort to accompany a combat team on a clandestine mission, and the assignment is passed down the chain of command until it reaches Costas.
When the mission goes wrong, Costas performs an act of uncommon and unexpected heroism. But this is a time and place where everything is upside down, inside out, and backward, so his extraordinary achievement is twisted into a tragic result. Albert can find no one to help make things right. Certainly not among the weird characters he has met along the way—not O.D., Cookie, Frieda, The Phantom, nor Dum-Dum Toledo. Not even Wigwam.
